MASTIC AND HALITOSIS

Mastic and halitosis

Halitosis is the third most common oral condition perceived by the patients as pathologic, after caries and periodontal diseases. Orthodontic patients with fixed appliances are more prone to halitosis, due to the impaired oral hygiene and therefore increased plaque accumulation and increased amounts of available nutrients for the supragingival and subgingival microbes.

We are investigating the effect of mastic products on halitosis and periodontal health in patients undergoing orthodontic treatment with fixed appliances with randomized controlled double-blind trials.

More specifically, the aims of these trials are to investigate the effect of a) mastic mouthwash and b) mastic toothpaste on halitosis, plaque and gingival indexes in patients undergoing orthodontic treatment with fixed appliances on both dental arches.
