General description

The main objective of the Department is to educate the undergraduate dental students in Orthodontics, i.e. to provide the necessary knowledge and clinical skills so that the students will be able to diagnose malocclusions and apply appropriate preventive and interceptive measures.

The Department is also responsible for the 3-year postgraduate programme of clinical specialization in Orthodontics, which leads to a Master's degree in Orthodontics.

Facilities

The secretary's and the faculty's offices are located on the 4th floor of the Old Building of the Dental School. The Orthodontic Clinic on the 3rd floor of the New Building, equipped with 6 dental units, is used for clinical training of the undergraduate students. The postgraduate course is hosted on the 4th floor of the Old Building of the Dental School, which includes an 8-unit clinic, seminar rooms and a laboratory.

Educational activities

In undergraduate studies, the Department is responsible for teaching the following courses to the dental students:

  • Orthodontics I (7th semester) taught by seminars.
  • Orthodontics II (8th and 9th semesters) taught by seminars, laboratory practice, pre-clinical and clinical training.

In postgraduate studies, the Department is responsible for the theoretical, pre-clinical and clinical training of the postgraduate students in Orthodontics.

The postgraduate programme is a full member of the Network of Erasmus Based European Orthodontic Programs.

Research

The Department carries out research in areas related to Orthodontics, such as growth and development of the craniofacial complex, treatment procedures and orthodontic materials. The research is conducted in the research laboratories of the Dental School as well as in collaborating research labs of other University Schools and national and international institutes. The clinical studies are conducted in the undergraduate and postgraduate clinics of the Dental School.
