Oral Medicine and Pathology II (9th Semester)

Aim

Diagnosis and management of diseases affecting the oral and maxillofacial region, participation in biopsy performance and refer patients with systemic diseases to the appropriate medical specialty.

Learning outcomes

The student at the end of the 10th semester should be able to:

  • Follow a diagnostic approach based on the correct taking and interpretation of the patient's history in relation to the clinical features of the oral disease.
  • Select the necessary additional diagnostic/laboratory investigations, necessary to establish diagnosis and participate in incisional and/or excisional biopsy performance.
  • Correlate the clinical features with the additional diagnostic/laboratory findings and be able to distinguish a benign and/or inflammatory lesion from a malignant process.
  • Evaluate the histopathologic and cytologic findings and correlate them with the patient's oral disease.
  • Recommend the proper treatment and/or refer the patient to the appropriate medical specialty.
  • Recognize the oral complications of the patient's systemic pharmacologic treatment and participate in the rehabilitation of oral health.
  • Explain to the patient the risk factors of oral cancer development and suggest methods for cancer prevention.

Syndromes, and dysplasias of the oral mucosa, jawbones, salivary glands and face; Basic oral lesions; Diagnostic approach of oral diseases; Diagnostic approach of oral tumors and cysts; Diagnostic methodology and treatment of oral ulcerative conditions; Diagnostic methodology and treatment of oral pigmented lesions; Diagnostic methodology of intraosseous jawbone lesions; Diagnostic methodology and treatment of salivary gland diseases; Diagnostic methodology and treatment of oral inflammatory diseases; Diagnostic methodology and treatment of oral manifestations of infectious diseases; Diagnostic methodology and treatment of oral manifestations of mucocutaneous diseases; Diagnostic methodology and treatment of oral manifestations of autoimmune diseases; Diagnostic methodology and treatment of oral manifestations of hematological diseases and nutritional deficiencies; Oral cancer prevention.

Educational Methods

  • Seminars (in student groups).
  • Clinical practice.

Criteria for successful completion

  • Attendance of 80% of seminars.
  • Successful completion of the clinical requirements.
  • Successful final examination.
