Paediatric Dentistry I (7th semester)

Aim

The aim of the 7th semester is for the student to:

  • know the basic theoretical knowledge of paediatric dentistry
  • to apply the preventive and therapeutic techniques used in Paediatric Dentistry, on primary and permanent teeth,  in the laboratory under clinical simulation.

Learning outcomes

By the end of  the 7th semester the student  should know:

  1. The physical, mental and psychological development of the child.
  2. The factors that contribute to the positive attitude and behavior of the child at  the dental practice
  3. The psychological techniques of shaping positive behavior and the psychological techniques of modifying   negative behavior to positive, in the dental practice.
  4. The growth and development of the primary and mixed dentition,  the various stages of  formation and calcification  of  the  permanent teeth and their clinical significance as well as the favorable  eruption pattern and timing of the permanent teeth and  the possible effects of  the eruption deviations on the occlusion.
  5. The application of a preventive program during pregnancy and 1st year of life
  6. The development of a   personalized preventive program in the dental clinic for children, adolescents and orthodontic patients, as well as recognition of the patients caries risk.
  7. The basic principles of  four-hands dentistry and how to organize a pediatric dental practice.
  8. Clinical manifestations of dental caries in primary and permanent teeth  and application of ICDAS.
  9. The characteristics of the healthy periodontal tissues in primary teeth  the differences from those of the permanent teeth.
  10. How to take a complete medical and dental history, complete radiographic examination, and perform full diagnosis and treatment plan in children
  11. The advantages of the application of a rubber dam, and different  ways of rubber dam isolation in primary and mixed dentition on typodonts.
  12. The indications and administration techniques of local anesthesia in children
  13. The indications of sealants and preventive resin restorations as well as the application techniques.
  14. The anatomical differences of primary and permanent teeth and how these affect cavity preparation.
  15.  Differences in cavity preparation between primary and permanent and the indications of application of class I & II cavity preparations in primary teeth.
  16. Choose the appropriate restorative material for each cavity preparation, according to the age and the child’s caries risk.  
  17. The indications and materials for pulp protection in primary teeth.
  18. The techniques for treating pupal involved teeth in children and adolescents.
  19. The indications and techniques for pulpotomy in primary teeth.
  20. The indications, preparation technique and placement of preformed meta crowns in primary  and permanent teeth.
  21. Indications of space maintenance after premature extraction or loss of primary teeth and choosing appropriate space maintainers.
  22. The epidemiology and classification of dental injuries in primary  and mixed dentition, including history taking, clinical and radiographic  examination.
  23. Identification of different injuries of hard dental tissues and how they are treated
  24. Identification of different injuries that involve the periodontal tissues  and how they are treated
  25. The indications for  tooth extraction and appropriate techniques.

By the end of  the 7th semester the student  should be able to:

  • Asses caries risk and design an individualized preventive program for children and adolescents for application in the dental office and at home.
  •  Sitting in a proper working position under simulated conditions in accordance with the basic principles of four-hand dentistry and organizing the working field.
  • Apply rubber dam isolation in primary and mixed dentition on typodonts.
  •  Apply sealants in primary  and permanent plastic and natural teeth.

  • Prepare and restore  minimal invasive  cavities in preimary and permanent natural teeth.
  • Prepare modified class  I and II cavities in plastic and natural primary  teeth for composite resin and amalgam restoration.
  • Prepare for and apply a stainless steel crown in primary  plastic teeth.
  • Perform a pulpotomy on extracted  natural primary teeth.
  • Apply a trauma splint in plastic teeth.

Contents

The child’s normal growth and development; Tooth development, tooth eruption and prevention of orthodontic anomalies; The child’s behavior in the dental clinic. Control of pain, fear and stress during dental treatment; Examination – Diagnosis - Treatment planning; Aetiology and treatment of hard dental tissue diseases as well as periodontal diseases in deciduous and mixed dentition; Management of caries in deciduous, mixed and permanent dentition in children and adolescents ( prevention, monitor of caries, restorations, stainless steel crowns, extractions); Prevention and therapy of pulp pathology in deciduous and permanent teeth in children and adolescents; Dental considerations in the prevention and care of patients with special needs (handicapped and with chronic medical diseases); Four handed dentistry, organization and management of the paediatric dental office.

Educational Methods

  • Lectures.
  • Laboratory exercise with seminars.

SUCCESSFUL COMPLETION

  • Successful laboratory exams and practical exercises
  • Two successful interim exams or Successful final examination.
