Aim

The recognition and correlation of the clinical and histopathologic characteristics of the pathologic conditions which may develop in the oral mucosa, the salivary glands and the jaw bones.

Learning outcomes

The undergraduate student at the end of the 8th semester should be able to:

• Understand the etiology, pathogenesis and clinical manifestations of various syndromes and dysplasias of the oral and maxillofacial region and the role of various microbial or drug-related factors during the embryonic developmental period.
• Recognize microscopically any change in the normal histologic structure of the oral mucosa, the salivary glands and the jawbones.
• Recognize basic oral lesions and their histopathologic background.
• Distinguish benign lesions from malignant neoplasms that may develop in the oral mucosa, the jaw bones and the salivary glands and describe their clinical, radiographic and histopathologic characteristics.
• Be aware of the possible factors and mechanisms that may be involved in the etiology and pathogenesis of oral diseases.
• Recognize the oral manifestations of systemic diseases and be aware of their etiology and pathogenesis.

Content

Syndromes and dysplasias of the oral mucosa, the jaw bones, the salivary glands and the face. Basic oral mucosal lesions. Diagnostic approach of oral diseases. Clinical and histopathologic characteristics of oral tumors and cysts. Clinical and histopathologic characteristics of inflammatory and neoplastic oral diseases. Clinical and histopathologic characteristics of oral pigmented lesions. Clinical and histopathologic characteristics of intraosseous jaw lesions. Salivary gland diseases. Oral manifestations of infectious diseases. Oral manifestations of mucocutaneous diseases. Oral manifestations of autoimmune diseases. Oral manifestations of hematologic diseases and nutritional deficiencies. Prevention of oral cancer
