Oral Surgery I (6th semester)

Aim

Basic surgical principles, simple and surgical extractions, complications, emergencies

Learning outcomes

By the end of the 6th semester the student must know:

  • The basic principles of sterilization, disinfection-antisepsis.
  • The basic principles of surgery
  • To be able to recognize the necessary instruments and the way to use them
  • Recognize the incisions used in the oral surgery and be able/capable to apply them on certain/specific models.
  • The kinds of suturing and be able to perform/apply on specific/certain models.
  • The complications that may occur during or after surgery in the oral cavity.
  • To be able to take pulse and the blood pressure.
  • The anatomy of the venus plexus of the dorsal surface of the hand and the articubital fossa.
  • To be able to puncture a vein.
  • To be able to relate theoretical the conducting procedures with the general medical status of the patient.
  • To know what means cardiopulmonary resuscitation and be able to perform the basic steps on the phantom.

Contents

Basic surgical principles (sterilization-incisions-flaps-suturing-hemostasis); Simple and surgical extraction (indications–instruments-techniques); Complications (prevention-management); Emergency situations (prevention-management).

Educational Methods

  • Lectures.
  • Laboratory exercise.
  • Clinical training.

Criteria for successful completion

  • Successful completion of 90% the laboratory exercises.
  • Successful final examination.
