Periodontology I

AIM

The aim of the curriculum is the prevention and treatment of periodontal disease, as well as the treatment of any type of lesions of the periodontal tissues providing in each case the appropriate therapy, based on biologic principles that aim in the re-establishment of periodontal health and its long-term maintenance.

CONTENT OF THE COURSE

Lectures (topics)

1st cycle of courses

  • introduction in Periodontology
  • Normal, clinically healthy periodontium
  • Introduction in pathogenesis of periodontal diseases-Microbial factor-Calculus-Iatrogenic factors
  • Defensive mechanisms-Systemic factor
  • Revision and emphasis on the main topics of the previous lectures

2nd cycle of courses

  • Classification –progression of periodontal diseases and conditions
  • Gingival diseases
  • Chronic periodontitis, Aggressive periodontitis, Periodontitis associated with systemic diseases
  • Necrotizing ulcerative diseases, Abscesses, Periodontitis associated with endodontic lesions and developmental or acquired deformities and conditions, Bone resorption
  • Revision and emphasis on the main topics of the previous lectures

3rd cycle of courses

  • Clinical examination of the periodontal patient
  • Tooth mobility
  • Radiographic examination. Laboratory practice and tests
  • Revision and emphasis on the main topics of the previous lectures

4th cycle of courses

  • Prognosis
  • Epidemiology of periodontal diseases
  • Revision and emphasis on the main topics of the previous lectures

Seminars (topics)

  • Introduction. Objectives of periodontal therapy
  • Evaluation of the periodontal patient medical history
  • Means of periodontal therapy
  • Treatment planning
  • Oral hygiene (Self-performed plaque control)
  • Scaling-root planning
  • Use of antimicrobials in Periodontology

Splinting

  • Presentation of cases treated for gingivitis, after the completion of periodontal therapy. Discussion about diagnosis, prognosis and treatment planning.
  • Presentation of cases completed only with cause related therapy. Discussion about diagnosis, prognosis and treatment planning.
  • Presentation of periodontitis cases in patients with systemic diseases. Discussion about diagnosis, prognosis and treatment planning.
  • Revision and emphasis in therapeutic modalities as they are applied in clinical training of the students

EDUCATIONAL METHODS

  • Lectures.
  • Laboratory exercise.

SUCCESSFUL COMPLETION

  • Attendance of 80% of lectures.
  • Successful completion of the laboratory exercises.
  • Successful final examination
