General description

The main objective of the Department is preclinical training of Dental students in the treatment and conservation of good oral health, function and esthetic appearance of patients using restorations on natural teeth and replacements of missing teeth and adjacent oral structures, with artificial fixed, removable and implant supported prostheses. Moreover, the Department is responsible for preparing dental students to provide appropriate oral health care for older adults.

In addition the Department is responsible for the three-year postgraduate program of training in Prosthodontics leading to a Master of Science degree in Prosthodontics.

Faculty Staff

Faculty members are responsible for teaching of pre- and postgraduate courses of the Department as well as courses of other Departments of the School.

Faculty members are assisted in their duties by postgraduate students, PhD candidates and dentists holding a postgraduate degree. Faculty is also involved in Continuing Education courses and various scientific activities of the Dental School, Dental Associations and Dental Societies.

Educational activities

At the undergraduate level the Department is responsible for the following courses:

  • Fixed Prosthodontics I (4th, 5th, 6th semester).
  • Fixed Prosthodontics II (8th, 9th, 10th semester).
  • Removable Prosthodontics I (5th, 6th semester).
  • Removable Prosthodontics II (7th, 8th,9th, 10th semester).
  • Gerodontology (Geriatric Dentistry) 8th semester.
  • Dental Materials (2nd semester).
  • Clinical Application of Dental Materials (10th semester).

At postgraduate level the Department is responsible for the theoretical, clinical and academic training of postgraduate students in Prosthodontics.

Research

The Department conducts basic and clinical research on biomaterials, gerodontology (geriatric dentistry/dental geriatrics), advancement of rehabilitation methods, occlusion and physiology of the orofacial system and interactions of various kinds of restorations (fixed, removable, implant supported) on hard and soft tissues. Laboratory research is conducted in the research laboratories of the Dental School in cooperation with other Institutes (Medical School, Institute of Technology, ect) in Greece and Internationally. Clinical research is conducted in the pre and postgraduate clinics of the School.

Facilities

The secretariat and faculty offices are located on the 5th floor of the old and the 5th floor of the new building. Preclinical training takes place in the Dental Materials and Dental Simulation Laboratories at the basement of the old building which are equipped with state of the art laboratory and audiovisual equipment. Clinical training takes place in the Comprehensive Care Clinics of the 2nd and 3rd floors of the old building equipped with 80 dental units. Postgraduate clinical training takes place at the postgraduate prosthodontics clinic on the 4th floor of the new building and the implant clinic on the 3rd floor of the new building.
