General Description

The main objective of the Department of Preventive and Community Dentistry is to educate the undergraduate dental students in the methods of oral diseases prevention, in the applications of Community Dentistry for the promotion of the oral health of the population, in the methods of conducting epidemiological studies, in the way behavioral sciences contribute to the understanding and prevention of oral health problems and in the history of Dentistry.
Furthermore, the Department is responsible for the two-year postgraduate program which leads to the Master degree in Community dentistry.

Faculty staff

The faculty members are assisted in their educational activities by postgraduate students, PhD candidates and PhD dentists.

Educational activities

  • Concerning undergraduate studies, the Department is responsible for teaching the following courses:
  • Introduction to Dentistry and History of Dentistry - 1st semester.
  • Epidemiology - 4th semester.
  • Preventive Dentistry - 4th semester.
  • Community Dentistry - 5th semester.

Concerning postgraduate studies, the Department is responsible for the theoretical and practical training of the postgraduate students in Community Dentistry. 

Research

The Department conducts studies concerning the effectiveness of the means and methods in oral disease prevention, the oral health status of the population, the knowledge, attitudes and behavior of the population on oral health matters as well as other topics concerning Community dentistry. The laboratory research is carried out in the Research Laboratory of Preventive and Community Dentistry as well as in the other research laboratories of the Dental School and other University Schools and Research Institutes.  The clinical studies are conducted in the undergraduate and postgraduate clinics of the Dental School, while epidemiological studies are carried out in various population groups.

Facilities

The secretary’s and the faculty’s offices are located on the 5th floor of the Old Building of the Dental School. The Department utilizes for its educational activities the facilities provided by the Dental School, while for laboratory research the Research Laboratory of Preventive and Community Dentistry situated in the 1st basement level of the Old Building of the Dental school is utilized.
