General description

The main objective of the Department of Oral Pathology and Medicine is to educate the undergraduate dental students in the diagnosis and therapeutic management of oral diseases by providing the basic knowledge on the clinical and histopathological features of those diseases.

In addition, the Department has the responsibility of a 3-year postgraduate programme (divided to 6 semesters) of clinical specialization in Oral Pathology and Medicine, which leads to the Masterʼs degree in Stomatology.

Faculty-Staff

The faculty members are engaged to teach the undergraduate and postgraduate courses and are assisted in their educational activities by post graduate students, PhD candidates and PhD dentists.

Additionally, the faculty members are involved in the Continuing Education of dentists by participating in various scientific activities organized by the Dental School, other dental associations and scientific societies.

Educational activities

Regarding the undergraduate studies, the Department is responsible for the following two main courses:

  • Oral Pathology and Medicine Part I ( 7th and 8th semester) and
  • Oral Pathology and Medicine Part II ( 9th and 10th semester)

The education is developed through laboratory activities, clinical and clinicopathological Seminars.

In postgraduate studies, the Department is responsible for teaching and training of the postgraduate students in the diagnosis, treatment and research of oral mucosa, salivary glands and jaws diseases, as well as the manifestations of systemic diseases in the mouth.

Research

The research activities of the Department include clinical and laboratory studies which focus on the etiology and pathogenesis of diseases of the oral mucosa, the salivary glands and the jaws. Clinical studies are undertaken in the undergraduate and postgraduate Clinics, while basic research is conducted in the Oral Pathology and/or Oral Microbiology Laboratories of the Dental School or in collaborating Pathology, Immunology, and Microbiology Departments of the Medical School or the General Hospitals in Athens.

Facilities - Equipment

The Faculty and the secretary offices are located in the 1st floor of the Old Building of the Dental School. The microscope seminar room which is equipped with audiovisual aids and 20 optical microscopes is used for the education of the undergraduate and postgraduate students in Oral Pathology and is located in the 1st floor of the new Wing of the Dental School. The clinical training of the undergraduate and postgraduate students in Oral Medicine is performed in the Stomatology Clinic located in the 1st floor of the Old Building of the Dental School adjacent to the Oral Pathology Laboratory of the Department which is equipped with technical facilities and supplies for tissue specimens embedding and processing. It is used for diagnostic purposes as well as educational and research activities. In the Stomatology Clinic patients are clinically examined, diagnosed and managed. Biopsies are routinely performed when necessary. The seminar room of the Department equipped with two optical five vision microscopes and one photographic microscope are also used for the education of the postgraduate students in Oral Pathology. The seminar room in the 1st floor of the Old Building is used for lectures, clinicopathological seminars and undergraduate and postgraduate courses.
