General description
The main objective of the Department of Oral Medicine and Pathology is to educate the undergraduate dental students in the diagnosis, prevention and therapeutic management of diseases of the oral and maxillofacial region.
In addition, the Department has the responsibility of a 3-year postgraduate program in Oral Medicine and Pathology, which leads to a Master’s degree

The faculty members are engaged in teaching the undergraduate and postgraduate courses of Oral Medicine and Pathology and also participate in teaching other undergraduate and postgraduate courses of the Dental School Curriculum. Faculty members are assisted by postgraduate students and PhD candidates.
Additionally, the faculty members are involved in the Continuing Education of dentists by participating in courses, seminars and conferences organized by the Dental School and various scientific societies and professional dental organizations.
Undergraduate Studies
The Department is responsible for the following courses:
- Oral Medicine and Pathology I (7th Semester)
- Oral Medicine and Pathology I (8th Semester)
- Oral Medicine and Pathology II (9th Semester)
- Oral Medicine and Pathology II (10th Semester)
- General Histology and Embryology - Oral Histology and Embryology (2nd semester), in collaboration with the Laboratory of Histology - Embryology of the School of Medicine NKUA.
- Hospital Dentistry: Lectures (8th semester)
- Hospital Dentistry: Clinical training (9th & 10th semester, Monday to Thursday 9.00 – 13.00).
Undergraduate educational activities include lectures, seminars (in groups of students), laboratory and clinical training.
Postgraduate Studies
The Department is responsible for teaching and clinical and laboratory training of the postgraduate students in Oral Medicine and Pathology.
The postgraduate training aims at developing theoretical and practical knowledge and skills as well as clinical and laboratory experience for the diagnosis, prevention, treatment and research of oral mucosa, salivary gland and jaw diseases and the oral manifestations of systemic diseases.
Research
The Department’s research activities are performed in collaboration with other Departments of the Dental School, the Medical School and other Schools of NKUA, other Universities, Hospitals and Research Institutions of the country, as well as International Universities and Research Institutions. The main fields of research include clinical, histopathologic and other laboratory (e.g. immunohistochemical, molecular, immunologic) studies, which focus on the etiology and pathogenesis, diagnosis and management of diseases of the oral mucosa, salivary glands and the jaws.
Facilities - Equipment
The offices of the faculty and the secretary are located on the 1st floor of the Old Building of the Dental School.
The Laboratory uses the infrastructure of the Dental School (including lecture halls and seminar rooms) for its educational, clinical, laboratory and research activities. In addition, the following are available:
a) for the laboratory training of undergraduate students: the Microscope Hall, located on the 1st floor of the New Building of the Dental School, which is equipped with modern audiovisual equipment and 20 optical microscopes for study of histological specimens,
b) for the laboratory training and research activities of postgraduate students: the Microscope Room, located on the 1st floor of the Old Building of the Dental School, which is equipped with a multi-headed optical microscope and one photographic microscope with a computer and display system, as well as the Histopathological Laboratory located on the 1st floor of the Old Building of the Dental School, which is equipped with technical facilities and supplies for tissue specimen processing,
c) for the clinical practice of undergraduate and postgraduate students: the dental units in the Oral Medicine & Pathology Clinic, located on the 1st floor of the Old Building of the Dental School. Also, adjacent to the clinic, there is a seminar room with a computer and a screen.
