General description

The objectives of the Department are:
A. Clinical training of the undergraduate students in:

  1. Dental Anaesthesia
  2. Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, (extractions, complicated extractions, removal of wisdom teeth, removal of small benign tumours from the oral cavity , biopsies, cysts,etc).

B. Theoretical training of the undergraduate students in:

  1. Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.
  2. Osseo integrated implants.
  3. Lasers in Dentistry.

C. Training of Dentists and Medical Doctors in order to obtain the Specialty of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.

D. Training of Dentists in order to obtain Master Degree in Oral Pathobiology with direction towards Oral Surgery (a 2 year Postgraduate Program).

Faculty - Staff

The faculty members are engaged in:

1.Teaching in the undergraduate and postgraduate courses, while they are also teaching in the undergraduate and postgraduate courses of other Departments of the Dental School.

2.Health services ( clinical examination, surgical operations, post operative follow up) in patients of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Clinic which is established at the Dental School, ʽʼEvangelismosʼʼ General Hospital and the ʽʼP.and A. Kyriakouʼʼ Childrenʼs Hospital.

The faculty members are assisted in their educational activities by Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, postgraduate students, PhD candidates and PhD dentists who have post graduate studies in a relevant with the Clinic subject. Additionally, the faculty members are involved in the Continuing Education of Dentists and Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons participating in various scientific activities of the Dental School or in collaboration with various dental associations or scientific societies.

Educational Activities

In Undergraduate level, the Department is responsible for teaching the following courses:

  • Dental Anaesthesia ( 6th semester)
  • Oral Surgery I (7th and 8th semester)
  • Oral Surgery II ( 9th and 10th semester)
  • Maxillofacial Surgery I ( 8th semester)
  • Maxillofacial Surgery II (9th and 10th semester)
  • Introduction in Oral Implantology (10th semester)
  • Lasers in Dentistry. (10th semester) Selection class.

In Postgraduate level, the Department is responsible for the theoretical and clinical training of Dentists and Medical Doctors specializing in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, and of Dentists and Medical Doctors candidates for Masterʼs and/or PhD Degree.

Research

The research work is focused in the investigation for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery diseases.

For this purpose the Department organizes and carry out research protocols in collaboration with other Departments of our School, other University Schools or other National or International Research Foundations.

Facilities

The secretariat and the faculty offices of the Department are located in the 1st floor and ground floor of the Old Building of the Dental School and in the 7th floor of "Evangelismos" General Hospital, and the 3rd floor of "P.and A.Kyriakou" Childrenʼs Hospital. The preclinical training of the undergraduate students is carried out in the ground floor, 1st, 2nd and 5th floors seminar rooms of the Old Building of the Dental School. The clinical training is carried out in:

  1. Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Clinic in the ground floor of the Old Building which is equipped with 12 dental units, and there is an area for Video and DVD projections
  2. Operating theatres and outpatient examination rooms in the 1st floor of the Old Building
  3. Outpatient examination rooms, operating theatres and patients wards of the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Clinic of ʽʼEvangelismosʼʼ General Hospital and of ʽʼP. and A. Kyriakouʼʼ Childrenʼs Hospital.
