General description

The main objective of the Department of Operative Dentistry is to educate the undergraduate dental students in the field of Restorative/Operative Dentistry mainly in diagnosis, prevention, arrest and restoration of dental tissues affected by caries and other lesions as well as, in the management of aesthetic tooth problems. In addition, the Department is responsible for the 3-year postgraduate program of clinical specialization in Restorative/Operative Dentistry, which leads to Master degree in Restorative/Operative Dentistry

Faculty - Staff

The faculty members are engaged in teaching in undergraduate and postgraduate courses. In addition, one faculty member is course director in the undergraduate course “Organization and Management of the Dental Practice” (Professor Tzoutzas J). The faculty members are assisted in their educational activities by postgraduate students, PhD candidates and PhD dentists.

Additionally, the faculty members are involved in the Continuous Education of dentists by participating in courses organized by the Dental School, dental associations and scientific societies.

Undergraduate Program of Studies

The education of undergraduate students in the subject of operative dentistry includes their theoretical training (seminars, lectures) and their practical exercise both in Fantoms (preclinical exercise in the Simulation laboratory) as well as with patients (clinical exercise). The lab exercise and the lectures are delivered in the 4th and 5th semester of studies, the seminars in the 7th and 8th and the clinical exercise from the 7th to the 10th semester, in the clinic of KSAA (Clinic of Total Patient Treatment).

Additionally, students acquire initial clinical familiarity in operative dentistry field during the 6th clinical exercise, where they prepare for entry to the KSAA, which begins at the 7th semester.

Postgraduate Program of Studies

At the postgraduate level, the Department supports the program entitled "Restorative Dentistry" (from 2018-19); until then (1991-2017), the program was named «Operative Dentistry ". The 3-year program includes courses, clinical exercise and a Master Thesis.

Forty-six (46) students have graduated and sixteen (16) are active students (10.5.2019).

Research

The Department is focused in the research fields of: dental tissues pathology - mainly dental caries (diagnosis, prevention) – dental aesthetics, dental materials and restorative techniques. The in vitro studies are carried out in the research laboratories of the Dental School (biomaterials, histology, microbiology, dental materials etc.) as well as in collaborating research labs and Institutes. The clinical studies are conducted in the undergraduate and postgraduate clinics of the Dental School The research carried out is part of either the research activity of individual members of the laboratory with short-term objectives or part of more general research programs with medium-term objectives. . In addition, this research is mostly based on Master and PhD projects. The results are published in dental national and international journals and are announced in scientific meetings

Facilities

The secretaryʼs and the facultyʼs offices are located in the 2nd floor of the Old Building of the Dental School. The preclinical practice of the undergraduate students in Operative Dentistry is hosted in the Dental Simulation Laboratory at the basement of the Old Building, which is equipped with audiovisual aids and 40 dental units with phantom heads. The clinical training of the undergraduate students is incorporated into Total Patient Care Clinic located in the main clinics of the 2nd and 3rd floor of the Old Building, which are equipped with 80 dental units. For the education of the postgraduate students the clinic of the 2nd floor of the New Wing of the Dental School is used as well as seminar rooms of that Building.
