General description.

The main objective of the Department of Operative Dentistry is to educate the undergraduate dental students in the diagnosis, prevention, arrest and restoration of dental tissues affected by caries and other diseases, and in the management of esthetic problems of teeth.

In addition, the Department is responsible for the 3-year postgraduate program of clinical specialization in Operative Dentistry, which leads to Masterʼs degree in Operative Dentistry

Faculty - Staff

The faculty members are engaged in teaching in the undergraduate and postgraduate before mentioned courses and they also teach in courses of other dental postgraduate programs. In addition, faculty members are course directors in two undergraduate elected courses (Dental Computer Science - Associate Professor Lagouvardos P & Organization and Management of the Dental Practice - Associate Professor Tzoutzas J). The faculty members are assisted in their educational activities by postgraduate students, PhD candidates and PhD dentists.

Additionally, the faculty members are involved in the Continuing Education of dentists by participating in various scientific activities of the Dental School and of dental associations and scientific societies.

Educational activities

In undergraduate studies, the Department is responsible for teaching the following courses to the dental students:

  • Operative Dentistry I (5th and 6th semester) taught by lectures and preclinical practice.
  • Operative Dentistry II (7th to 10th semester) taught by seminars and clinical training.
  • Dental Morphology and Introduction to Occlusion (2nd semester) taught by lectures and laboratory practice.
  • Pathology of Hard Dental Tissues (3rd semester) taught by lectures.

In postgraduate studies, the Department is responsible for the theoretical, preclinical and clinical training of the postgraduate students in Operative Dentistry.

Research

The Department is focused in the research fields of dental materials, restorative techniques, physiology and pathology of hard dental tissues. The in vitro studies are carried out in the research laboratories of the Dental School (biomaterials, histology, microbiology etc.) as well as in collaborating research labs of other University Schools, in Research National and International Institutes. The clinical studies are conducted in the undergraduate and postgraduate clinics of the Dental School.

Facilities

The secretaryʼs and the facultyʼs offices are located in the 2nd floor of the Old Building of the Dental School. The preclinical practice of the undergraduate students in Operative Dentistry is hosted in the Dental Simulation Laboratory at the basement of the Old Building, which is equipped with audiovisual aids and 40 dental units with phantom heads. The clinical training of the undergraduate students is incorporated into Total Patient Care Clinic located in the main clinics of the 2nd and 3rd floor of the Old Building, which are equipped with 80 dental units. For the education of the postgraduate students the clinic of the 2nd floor of the New Wing of the Dental School is used as well as seminar rooms of that Building.
